I was speaking to some friends about killing weeds without the use of chemicals. I wanted to kill the weeds; however, I did not want to harm the birds, bees, and ladybugs I was seeing in my yard. Here are some ideas we learned about and I thought you might enjoy knowing about them as well! Use the sun to kill weeds. Cover a large patch of ground with a heavy plastic sheet. Over the course of several weeks, the heat from the sun will kill the weeds underneath.
- Make a weed sprayfrom 1 oz of vodka added to 2 cups water plus a suirt of dish soap or One gallon vinegar and ¼ cup rock salt and a squirt of dish soap. The dish soap help the spray stick to leaves. This process works best in full sun.
- Pour boiling water on weeds. This is a great option for weeds in between stepping stones or in cracks in the sidewalk.
- Get a flamethrower (really). You can purchase a flame weeder from a local garden or hardware store. Be careful not to use this option any time there’s a risk of fire and only use it on tender green plants, not on larger, woody plants.
I will be trying these and would love to hear about your successes as well!
